The resignation of Mr. D. P. Thurston, headmaster of the Gonville School, has been received by the Wanganui. Education Board. Mr. Thurston has been in the service of the board for 43 years. The death of Mr. J. W. Matthew Son, general manager of the Union Steam Ship Company, was referred to at the combined shipping companies' annual smoke concert, at the Town Hall on Saturday night, and on thd"» motion of the chairman, Captain S. ;H6lm, those ■present stood in silence. . Tottenham, R.N., said that Mr. Matthewson had been a very good friend of the naval service, to which he had given assistance in many ways, .including granting leave to officers of the Union-Company for training in naval vessels from time ,to time. • . i • ■ .;.
