O.S.K. DIRECT SERVICE

TO RESUME NEXT MONTH

The .direct service to New Zealand conducted by the Osaka Shosen Kaisha, which was abandoned at the end of July, is to be. resumed -next month, according to advice received today from the Federal Steam Navigation Company, New Zealand agents for the line. . '

The direct service to New Zealand was inaugurated in July last with the arrival of the Sydney Maru with Japanese■ cargo for .discharge on_ ; the coast. The. company,' anticipating further developments of trade, in these waters, had .just completed two new liners for the Australia service, which wer.e specially designed for the carriage of wool, these being the Tokyo Maru and Canberra Maru t vessels capable of developing a speed of 21 knots. The Canberra Maru made her first call at Wellington on September 3, being transferred to the" New Zealand run because' of the recent heavy Australian duties against Japanese products.

As a result of the cancellation of the direct service to New Zealand the Melbourne Maru and the Sydney Maru were withdrawn from the service, and, the Canberra Maru, the Tokyo Maru; and the Brisbane Maru entered the trade from Japan to Dunedin,. Lytteiton, Wellington, and Auckland, returning to Japan via Australian ports, With'the resumption of the direct service the Melbourne Maru, Sydney Mami, and Brisbane Maru will again enter the New Zealand service, while Canberra Maru and Tokyo Marii will be diverted to the Australian trade;,; The vessels for New Zealand, •vyiir,now proceed direct from Japan, to :New Zealand, calling at Rabaul and ifoumea en route, and discharging cargo at Auckland, Wellington! Lyttelt'cin and Dunedin. They will load,, at Lytteiton and Dunedin during, discharge, and return to Wellington and Auckland to complete loading, sailing finally from Auckland to Japan, via the Philippine Islands, HongVKong, and Shanghai.
