Books that have- been damaged by finger-marks on the pages may be much improved by the application of french'chalk' (states the "Manchester Guardian"). This should be sprinkled evenly over the marks and. left en for several 'hours. It should then be covered with a sheet of clean blottingpaper, pressed carefully with a hot iron, and brushed off.
Ink marks should be treated with oxalic acid. A little of the acid 'should be dissolved in an eggcupful of warm water and lightly applied to the ink stains with'a glass,rod or a small pad of cotton wool. Surplus moisture should be removed at once with clean blotting-paper- as soon as the marks fade, and the book should be kept open until the page is perfectly dry.
