INTER-CLUB RIVALRY
MOERA BEAT NEWTOWN
Patrons at the Wellington Show Stadium last night were treated to a good night's entertainment of solid boxing when Moera successfully defended a challenge by the Newtown Club for the Newtown Challenge Cup, by five wins to three. Each bout was keenly contested and the winner in several cases won only by a slight margin. Mr. Earl Stewart was the referee, and the judges were Mr. W. P. Sommervill# and Major T. J. King.
Following are the results:—
Welterweight (no weights).—J, Scott (Moera) beat G. Sampson (Newtown). This bout was a solid slogging • one, in which both boxers forgot all about their gymnasium training and went at it hammer and tongs.
P. Traynor (Moera), 7st, beat W. Newnan (Newtown), 6st 121b, by a very slight margain. Both boys fought exceedingly well and it was difficult to separate them at the finish.
C. McNaughton (Newtown), 9st, beat S. Edney (Moera), 9st 31b. McNaughton punched straighter and timed his blows better.
A. Byrne (Moera), Bst 51b, beat J. McDonald (Newtown), Bst 51b. This was a hard-fought bout, but McDonald had to give way to his more youthful opponent. • ■
J. Martin (Moera), 9st 71b, beat J. Hansen (Newtown.), 9st 41b. A fast, scientific bout in which both boys showed science of a high order. At the end of three rounds the judges could not agree and the referee ordered another round, in which Martin secured the honours.
T. Carbin (Newtown), 9st 71b, beat D. Reynolds (Moera), 9st 61b. Carbin was too superior and won every round, although he had to take several hard punches.
J. Traynor (Moera), 7st 121b, beat McDowell (Newtown), 7st 131b. Traynor won by better timing and straight punching.
B. McDonald (Newtown), 4st 81b, beat S. Coburn (Moera), 4st 121b, in a contest of three one-minute rounds. It was one of the finest bouts seen for some time. The winner, a diminutive boy, boxed like .an old hand and would put to shame many of his seniors by his sterling exhibition of boxing. • ■ . " •. •
Herb. Larsen and J. Parker (bantam
champion of Wellington) boxed an exhibition over three two-minute rounds.
A. Perrett (Silverstream), lOst 21b, beat D. Glengarry (Newtown), 9st 131b, in a four-round contest. Both fought splendidly throughout, Perrett gaining the verdict by cleaner • hitting.
R. Callaghan (Newtown),' 9st 131b, beat G. Allan (Newtown), lOst 21b, in an exhibition bout. The margin of points was very slight.
