FIRST A DIVISION
INSTITUTE 'AND SWIFTS
Marred, by. a strong cross-wind and rain squalls, the match between Swifts and Institute Old Boys was nevertheless an interesting one. The slippery condition of Kelburn Park made play increasingly difficult, and most of the seemingly wild shooting was due to ,the fact that the players had as much as they could do. to keep their-feet. Swifts stood up well to Institute,'and • had their fair share of the ball. The teams were as follows:— Institute Old Boys.—King; Watson, McLean; Bilby, Boyes, Hicks; Marshall, It Sutherland, Ward, Tanner, McINaughton.
A strong opening movement by Swifts forced King to the ground for a -neat save,, but Institute cleared and Jhen went right back iipfield. Boyes, .the: centre-half, followed up closely, and seized his chance to place-a 'fast shot, past Kelly. A period of indeterminate play followed, in which both teams, held the advantage at different times; but in which neither could make any use of it. King was the main obstacle in the way;of Swifts, who narrowly missed scoring several times. Early in the second spell: Institute worked in close, and the bail went to Ward, who was unmarked. : He made no mistake with a short drive. Still heavier rain set in, and play consequently slowed down, with Swifts continuously on the offensive. The neatest piece of play in the match occurred when Hawken took a corner kick, received ;' a return pass, and found'the goal with a splendid long shot from the side-line. The game ended with the score: Institute Old Boys 2, Swifts
Mr. J. Duncan was the referee.
