BONNY BUFF WINS

WABIATE' MEETING

DEAD HEAT IN MORVEN

(Special to the "Evening Post.")

CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The ■\Vaimate District Hunt Club held its meeting on Saturday in fine but dull weather. It was quite a success, in spite of small fields for the last two events. The hunting enthusiasts of South Canterbury will have another and a better meeting at Washdyke next Saturday, while a week later the Christchurch Hunt Club will take up the running at Riccarton. : The totalisator handled £4248. 10s, against £3852, an increase of £396 10s. ACCIDENTS GALORE. A chapter of accidents took much of the interest out of the Amateur Cup Steeplechase. Scotsden ran off at the initial'fence, the first of-the stand double, and in a scramble the others went off at the second leg, except Tea Urn. All went back and jumped the double, but Tea Urn had a long lead, Waikari and Burglar following at intervals, with Scotsden and Bonny Buff a long way back. Burglar headed Waikari half a .mile from home. Tea Urn still looked a sure winner, but he broke down, Burglar beating' him by two, lengths. Waikari, after appearing to be beaten, came on again, being only a length away. Tea Urn could not have lost had he remained sound to the end of the race, but there might have been a different result but for the trouble at the first fence. As-Waikari had an advantage over the others who ran off, when they got going again, no excuses'could be made for his defeat. Scotsden ran off again at the stand double a,round from home, but subsequently'jumped it, - finishing fourth. Bonny Buffi was pulled up. Sunny Comet, a Day .'Comet gelding from, a relative of Rapier, set out to win the Studholme Hurdles all the way, but after .a' .faulty jump at the first flight he ran' off. in determined fashion at the second. After that Redolent was in front, all the way, and never-looked in serious danger of defeat. He showed some promise as a hurdler at the Dunedih Meeting; last month, but tripped over Sisterena when she came 'to grief. Since then he has joined S. Barr's stable at Riccarton, and he may make a useful hurdler. Havering went well to the straight, only to stop badly. He-is decidedly- on .the down-grade. Footwork - was staying on, but" Blazon'was going best of all over the1 last furlong. He should do better before long. Goldstead. went well for a-mile. •

Mutus, a Songbird five-year-old from T. Hobbs's Oamaru, stable, hadaneasy win in the Novice Stakes. After being in fourth place to' Hie home turn, he moved up, arid had the opposition settled in a few strides. ' He will do. better. Master Dingle, a Shambles two-year-old; came with a' great rush to snatch second place, an-7 attractive effort, as he got off badly and was giving the leaders a long start from the home .turn; .Last Dance was- always prominent, but/was stopping a little in the straight, after he looked certain to be second. Desirable showed plenty of speed but collapsed in the run home. Her Excellency went well for half a mile. The- two-year-old Owlnest settled her chance by a slow jump-out. Tautau -Maid had every chance, but Peacock was, one of those that began badly. • ■~ -,- . ... BONNY BUFF'S CHASE. The Hunt" Cup Steeplechase was a good race. /There were seven, starters and six of them completed tl|(e course. The other was.Wyk'emist. He was sore when he went out, and after a poor showing, -w^th more than: one faulty' jump;j;he- was'.piilled,"up.;" Pallaform pet out.io. win alj'the. way, but herw.as"done•Kvlth; a-mile.\from home. Harkaway then:had'his-turn in front," out he failed ;over ;ithe>last: two furlongs, being beateiiinto it&i& place in the last couple of' stticles.'' U£'!96tiiiy 'Buff was going well al.l.the.vvay^fcohiing on from the .homei: tuim;to" "winirnicely. ,His jumping display *was Tn.6t^perfect, but he went much better than in the first race, in which he was* the last to get going iagain- after-running1: off. The Southland iifiare Bandy .■• Boa owed second placevtp her. stamina; Money Mine, :the'f^vbiicitei^y.er, looked dangerous. He/has riot shown his'best. this-winter. The Joker, went well-ifor a tune but failed to stay*1 Mi:i)".-i<v-.vV. . .Silver 'Coat -was v never far from the front in thie Waihao Hack Handicap, and he Avon as/he liked.' : He was a good two-year-bid in the spring of last season, but he: has: ndV lived up to his early form. Silver Lark, was not prominent early, but she finished well. Needful'was well placed at the end.of two furlongs, but lost his place, coming on again for third place.1 . Golden Vision was tiring, and Dracula .stopped badly, after going well'to the. straight. Pharaoh ran well -for. half a mile and Last Dance; showed up prominently sit the home turn, only,to fade out. again. Ada and Clpaneri'the early leaders in the Mpryen Handicap, were' done with before the straight was reached. The Surgeon" seemed to be going very well, alongside Golden Dart at this stage, but he'failed'.to slay.: Golden Dart looked all over a winner a hundred yards from the post, but Mount Val-came with a late rush for a deadheat. . Golden, Dart was stopping in the last-few strides, but Mount Val should be worth keeping in';friind' for a" mile race. The Surgeon may do. better before long. Toreador, easily outstayed the others.' Shock was also sticking on. Final Shot again raced moderately. A GOOD YOUNGSTER. . ' Gay Boa,'a Southland gelding in the same ownership as steeplechaser Miss Winston, won-the Hunters' Plate very easily, -after being.third till half a mile from home. It was his first start in a race, and as he is only four years old, he should do better, soon. Hot Tea easily beat the others, but had no chance with the winner. Tippling the favourite, seemed to be going"well enough to the turn,- but did not come on. He gave Mr. Ken Austin, of the Elderslie Stud, his first race ride in New Zealand.- . Before he came here he was • one of the leading amateurs of New Sbuth "Wales, and he may be seen at Eic'carton next month in the Gloucester; Cup. 'Pink Comet, made the pace so hot that he was well beaten long before the straight was reached. The "Waimate Hack Handicap .was a good thing for Queen Dorothy. She waited On her opponents to the straight and then shot out to win easily.. She is a useful sort, due for something better. Dracula stayed on much better than in his earlier race, and narrowly beat Poniard, a gelding that has not quite realised expectations.: ..Needful, the only other starter, went well for about five furlongs and then dropped out quickly, a disappointing effort after his strong finish in'his earlier irace. Amateur Cup Steeplechase, £20; gentlemen 'riders; about 2 miles. —1 Burglar. 11.9 (R. Westenra), 1; 3 Tea Urn, 11,8 (W.
