VICTORIAN BOOKMAKERS

Bookmakers of Victoria intend to approach the Victoria Bating Club and the' Government to urge the abolition of the tax on backers, and to ask for some, reduction of the tax' on bookmakers' tickets. They feel that with the improved financial condition of the State and the increased revenue from the totalisator, there should be relief. It is claimed that many backers, who formerly made a-bet-of £5 have, reduced their bet to £4, and so escape the tax of Is which they have to pay on bets of £5 and less than £10. The man who wishes to place £5 on a horse still does so, but to escape the tax he can make one bet of £4 and one,.of £1.;. This, however, costs the paddock bookmaker exactly double in ticket tax. He has to write two tickets worth sixpence each, instead of one, as' formerly. ■ .. .. .
