GROCERY LINES.
The general tendency ror prices in grocery lines at ports of shipment is to rise. Slight movements upwards are reported in. canned pineapples. Sago and tapioca on. latest cable advices are quite firm at present prices." Pepper, nutmegs, and mace are easier. Fair business is reported in canned salmon at opening prices which were lower than those of last season. Australian canned fruits maintain opening prices. There is no heavy buying of Australian dried fruits,' prices for which are steady. Early this week Christchurch received advices that, due to the severe drought in the United States of America, this season's crop of maize has been considerably reduced, and cornflour manufacturers advise an advance of Is 6d per cwt on their recent quotations. There seems every prospect of further advances later. The market is quoted very firm for Californian prunes, and this week's quotation shows an all-round advance of- Is 6d per cwt on the c.i.f. cost. A quotation just to hand advises new season's Turkish canary seed September shipment at 10s per cwt lower than ruling last week.
