MINISTER WILLING

REVISION COMMITTEE

The New Zealand Law Society has received advice from -the AttorneyGeneral' (the; Hon. H. G.R. Mason) that he wishes to give effect as soon as possible to the suggestion regarding law reform: embodied in a resolution framed at the legal conference in Dunedin. ." '• .. • ' ■

The "resolution read: "That this conference recommends the establishment of a : Standing Committee along -the lines of the Law Revision Committee in England, to consider and report on all matters committed to it relating to the administration, of justice and the reform of the. law; and the AttorneyGeneral be asked to bring before the Acting Chief Justice the proceedings of the conference and to confer.with him on the establishment of the above committee." . .

"I have already discussed the matter with the Acting Chief Justice, and shall be glad, before' setting up the. committee, to receive and consider any representations that your society' may care to make in reference to its establishment," stated the Minister's letter, which -was read at. the quarterly meeting of the council of the society. "In order to assist your society in its consideration of the matter I desire to say that,'as I view'it at present, the personnel of the committee might be as follows:— «

"(1) The Chief Justice or Acting Chief Justice with at least one other Judge. I doubt, however, if much can fairly be. expected from the. Judges in view of their circuit and other engagements. (2). The Attorney-General, the Solicitor-General, ■ and the .Parliamentary law' draftsman.-.' (3) Two representatives selected by the, University Law Faculty.' .(4). Three representatives .of the legal profession to be selected by the New Zealand Law Society."
