WAGE RESTORATION
INDUSTRIAL PROTEST
BAD RESULT FEARED
(By Telesraph—Press. Association.)
• CHRISTCHTJRCH, July 17. ! The Canterbury Employers' Association has made representations to the Government on its announced intention to, introduce legislation next week to 'restore the 1931 wages rates and other award conditions. The association considers. that there will be a most' unfortunate disturbance of the existing award conditions, and argues that the legislation already existing provides workers with ample facilities for obtaining the..wage rates and. improvement in conditions, and that the proposed legislation on top of the amendments to the Factories and Shops and Offices Acts, the 40-hour week and the' basic wage will place industry in a condition, of chaos and thus jeopardise the employment of hundreds of workers and the very existence of the businesses themselves. , : The ( association contends that the 1931 wages, were sustained by the 1931 price levels for exported produce, but that the present price levels will not support the 1931 wages. The association has protested against increases in wages- being made by Act of Parliament and. also against making such legislation retrospective.
The Prime Minister has replied that he will place the representations before the Government. .
