CHILLED BEEF TRADE

Mr. C. R. Barmcpat, of the Palmerston Dairy Research Institute, contributed a valuable paper on the chilling of beef for export, at The Hague Refrigeration Congress on June 20 He pointed out that the possibility of entering chilled beef markets of the United Kingdom had interested New Zealand for many years. It was not until the gas storage of chilled beef was developed by the Food Investigation Board, of Great Britain, however that any practical .efforts were made to initiate the trade. The Dominions chilled beef trade was now well established, he went on, although it was still relatively small as the nature of farming in New Zealand precluded the possibility of any vast expansion of its beef industry. Scientific observation had been carried out, in New Zealand on many shipments of chilled beef sent to Great Britain and had been correlated with reports sent back from London.
