ONION IMPORT TRADE

Auckland reports a' glut in the local onion market with some 600 tons of onions at Pukekohe. Supplies of Japanese and American onions are expected shortly. Australian onions amounting to 100 tons arrived by the Niagara and' are being returned for want of a market. They were ordered by a merchant in Vancouver, but before they arrived the Canadian Government- lifted the duty on supplies from the United States and the market was flooded at a price at which the Australian onions were unable to compete. Hoping to dispose of the stocks in New Zealand the merchants reshipped them, but were later informed that there was an embargo on Australian onions coming into the Dominion, and the consignment is now being returned to Australia.
