FRUIT MARKETING

LOCAL CONSUMPTION

GUARANTEED PRICE FAVOURED

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) HASTINGS, June 30. A guaranteed price to cover the fruit-growing industry is favoured by Hawkc's Bay growers w_ho were approached yesterday for their opinions regarding the decision arrived at by the Canterbury orchardists on Monday. It was said that the industry had to have some form of guaranteed prices before growers could meet higher wages and shorter hours. "By adequate control of domestic marketing, which is of paramount importance to the grower," said Mr. A. Lowe, "I can see great possibilities for a greater consumption of fruit in the Dominion. As an instance of this, if the whole of our population were to eat half a pound of apples a week there would not be au apple available for export."
