Dr. P. C. Carman, a former pupil of the' Southland Boys' High School, who later gained the degree of doctor of philosophy at London University, has been" appointed lecturer in applied chemistry at Cape Town University. For the past two years Dr. Carman, who will go to Cape Town in August, has been attached to the explosive branch, near Glasgow, of Imperial Chemical Industries, Limited-,. •
Cable advice has' been received by his parents in Wellington that FlightLieutenant U. Y. Shannon's permanent commission in toe-Royal Air Force has been confirmed. Plight-Lieut. Shannon was educated at the Clyde Quay School and later at Wellington College, where he was in the Rugby first fifteen. Oα entering the service of; Levin and Co, he played for Old Boys, and was also in the MaranUi champion surf club team. He left Levin's to go Home to jofii the R.A.F. and served for some time at Aba Suir and Heliopblis. For the past year he has been at several stations at Home and is at present at Mildenhall.
Because of' the pressure of Ministerial work, the Minister of Labour (the Hon. H.. T. Armstrong) has decided to resign from the Lyttelton Harbour Board, of which he has been * member since 1921.
