QUASHED VICTORIOUS

OMAHA NARROWLY BEATEN

ASCOT COLD CUP RESULT (Received June 19, 12.30 p.m.) LONDON, June 18. For the second year in ."succession a determined assault by an overseas horse on the Ascot Gold Cup was frustrated today, when Quashed narrowly defeated the American challenger Omaha in a tremendous finish. The pair outclassed the remainder of the field. The result of the race, the feature event on the third day of the Hoyal Ascot Meeting, was:— ASCOT GOLD CUP, sweepstakes of £100 each, with £4000 and cup valued at £500 added; second £700, third £300; for entire colts and fillies; 2J miles. Lord Stanley's hr m Quashed, by Obliterate—Verdict, by Shogun, 4yrs, 8.11 1 W. Woodward"s ch h Omaha, by Gallant Fox—Flambino, 4yrs, 9.0 ...:.-.• * Baron E. de Rothschild's b h Bokbul, by Blandford-rrßuanderie, 4yrs, 9.0 3 Nine starters.. Won by a short head, five lengths between second third. The winner, who is listed only in.the Half bred Stud Book, was bred by Lady Barbara Smith, and she is trained by C. Leader at Newmarket.

Quashed, vanquisher of the great American horse Omaha in this year's Ascot Gold Cup, has worthily upheld the traditions of the .English thoroughbred, just as Tiberius did against;the previously unbeaten French : wonder horse Brantome last. year.. Early in the present-year Quashed, who won the Oaks last year and has since developed into the. finest stayer in England, with successes at her two previous starts this season, looked to be the most formidable home defender against the American claimant, and so she has demonstrated herself to be, though her win over Omaha was by, the shortest of possible margins, in contrast to Tiberius's runaway victory at the end of last year's race. Quashed incidentally is the first of her sex to win the coveted prize since 1894, when La Fleche, one of England's greatest mares, was successful as a five-year-old, thus achieving an honour that was later to prove beyond the ability of both Sceptre and Pretty Polly, each of whom w.as defeated at Ascot. The only American horse out of many challengers since the Cup was first run •in 1807 to succeed has-been Foxhall, back in 1882.— "Rangatira."
