THEFT CHARGES

YOUNG MAN CONVICTED Sentences of a month's imprisonment with hard labour on each charge were imposed by Mr. E. M. Mosley, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court today on Charles Gordon Holland, a labourer, aged 26, who appeared for sentence on a charge of stealing a .compass and blade razor of a total value of £1 3s, and who pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing a wristlet watch valued at 30s from a person unknown. The terms are to be concurrent. Detective-Sergeant L. B. Revell said that on May 28 Albert Tubert reported that a razor, and compass had been taken from his room at the Columbia HoteL Detective Smeaton found the articles in a pawnshop, and discovered that they had been pawned by a man who gave his name as Phillips. He traced the articles to the accused. With them was found a watch, which the accused admitted stealing. He had been before the Court several times before. Cross-examined by the Magistrate, the accused said he was a married man, and had been before the Court in Timaru since his marriage. He had committed theft because he needed food. The Magistrate: There are many agencies in Wellington by which food may be obtained for you, and your wife too.
