MILK FOR CHILDREN
SMITH FAMILY'S EFFORTS
The free milk supply for children attending primary schools under the Education Board and Catholic Education Trust Board and kindergartens under the control of the Free Kindergartens' Association continues. During the past week no less than 3390 halfpint bottles of milk have been distributed at a cost of approximately £60 a week. The milk is paid for by the Smith Family, which originated the scheme four years ago.
The impression is abroad, the Smith Family stated today, that the mills distribution has been taken over by the Government, but this is r.ot so. The establishing of a national scheme involves investigation and organisation, and it would be unreasonable to expect a quick solution of the many problems that arise.
The benefits to the children are enormous, especially in these difficult times, and the Smith Family desires the assistance of every citizen in carrying out this service to' the community. Collectors make house-to-house calls. Each collector has a supply of 6d, Is, or 5s stamps which are sold and affixed to a calendar, the stamp being the receipt for the money. Contributors are asked to accept stamps in every case to the amount of the contribution. Should supporters of this scheme desire to contribute direct to .the Family, cheques should be crossed and made payable to the Smith Family. The Family has received many messages and letters of appreciation of the good that has resulted from the milk supply, and it believes that the citizens of Wellington which led New Zealand in this work will contribute liberally to ensure a continuance of the supply.
