TEMPERAMENT AND LIGHTS

Mr. John Arnold, president of the American Society of Cinematographers, who "lights" Hollywood's leading players, .declares that temperament is all a question of lighting. "Women shoul< choose lighting effects in their own homes to suit their subconscious colour sensitivities," he says. "A red-sensi-tive girl likes to have red lamp shades in her home, but she shouldn't. Red stimulates her to irritation. This girl should use green lampshades. A bluesensitive or green-sensitive girl may use red lamp shades. She needs stimulation. Sit under a red light, then unde? a green one, and notice the different'effects they have on you. We| photograph Joan Crawford with a little blue,in the lights because she is brown sensitive. Blue offsets brown. . Jean Harlow is pink sensitive, and we use white lights for her. Norma'Shearer is in the pink class. Garbo is green sensitive, so she has a little red to stimulate her. Jeannette Macdonald is red sensitive." Mr. Arnold has prepared a table for colour preferences. Here it is, for what it is worth: Brown, athletic, healthy, energetic; pink, patient, bashful; green, tranquil; red, quick, intense.
