TO TELL THE WORLD
SELASSIE'S OBJECT CIVILISATION DESTROYED CONFIDENCE IN ENGLAND LONDON, June 2. Haile Selassie told a "News-Chron-icla" special correspondent aboard the Orford that his object in coming to Europe was to let the world know what had happened in the war with Italy. "I shall ask them if it is right that the 25-centuries-old Ethiopian civilisation should be destroyed in 25 weeks with a barbarity that properly belongs to pre-Christian civilisation," he said.
His stay at Gibraltar, he declared, had in no way altered his plans. On the contrary, it had convinced him that England was as faithful to her friends in adversity as in prosperity.
"Are you then counting on Britain's support in the future?" Selassie was asked.
"I have full confidence in England, as in France and all other members of the League who have ranged themselves on the side of justice," he replied. No conditions have been imposed limiting his activities in Europe. "Will you, then, have fullest liberty of action?" was another query.
"Even the worst criminal is allowed to defend himself," he said. "Surely, then, a victim of an aggression which was condemned by fifty-two nations can at least make clear the circumstances of that aggression."
Haile Selassie was confident that Geneva would find a solution. "Ethiopian policy has not changed. We look to the League as a League member to sec that might does not conquer right."
