GOOD WANGANUI STAKES

Racing clubs throughout the country would be well advised to follow the good lead set by the Wanganui Jockey Club in substantially increasing its prize-money, for the programme approved for the Winter Meeting, to be held on June 20 and 23, has become a topic of conversation with racegoers. Not only is a large attendance of the public from outside centres assured, but the big stakes offered will make a very strong appeal to owners and trainers over a very wide area.

There is no doubt that the presence of good-class horses is a very great attraction to meetings. The public pay for racing and it is not unreasonable that they should expect only the best. Wanganui's endeavour to emerge from the rut will therefore not be overlooked by owners this year, for the prize-money for the coming fixture has been raised from £1980 to £3000.

On the first day the Century Hurdles, £350, 2 miles and 194 yards, and Grandstand Steeplechase, £350, about 2i miles, are the jumping events on the programme. The Empire Handicap, £200, 1 mile and a distance, and the Winter Oats, £150, six furlongs, are the open flat races. The second day of the meeting is being held on the King's Birthday, when the event of prime importance will be the Wanganui Steeplechase, £500, about 3 miles. The May Hurdles. 1J miles, carries a stake of *£250. The big flat race is the Connolly Handicap, £250, li miles, the Belmont Handicap, £150. six furlongs; being the second leg of the flat double. The Champion Hack Handicap should also be a big attraction with its £200 stake for a race run over a mile and a distance.

The betting will be under the singlepool system, with dividend indicators. Nominations for all events are due at 9 o'clock on Friday evening.
