ESPERANTO CLUB
The weekly meeting of the "Wellington Esperanto Club , was held last Monday night in the hall of the Tarai'rua Tramping Club, Nathan's Building, Grey Street. Mr. Vernon J. Leek. D.8.E.A., presided. . Correspondence was received from Esperanto clubs and individual Esperantists in England, .Scotland, France, Germany, U.S.S.R., Switzerland, Portugal, Spain, Rarotonga, Australia, United States, Canada, Uruguay, and Bolivia. The president announced that Mr. Edgar Hornblow, a member of the club en route to deliver an Esperanto lecture tour in 22 Eurqpean countries, had written from Rarotonga extending greetings and stating that he had formed an Esperanto class "on the bosom of the Pacific" with a membership of twelve. It was decided to open the clubroom from midday to 2 p.m. every Thursday, when members who lunched in town could meet, discuss new . proframme items, and engage generally in speranto conversation.
Classes were organised under the direction of club teachers, the senior members forming translation, conversation, and reading circles. The programme period opened with a short talk in Esperanto by the president on "La Interna Ideo," which was followed by another talk by Mr. L..D. Smith on "La Junularo kaj Mondpaco." Mr. Joseph Thomas played guitar solos— "Hibiscus Petals" and "Shadows of Hawaii." Mr. Charles Couch presented a brief talk in Esperanto on "Adiau al Frauleco." Mr. J. Allan at the piano gave several selections from Chopin. Mr. A. G. Blong followed with a diverting Esperanto narrative — "Kiam mi renkontis leonon sur la dezerto." The concluding item was given by Mr. Bertram Potts entitled "Mi haltigas uraganon." It was announced that a dance would take place next Monday evening instead of the usual Esperanto programme.
