BASIC WAGE FOR WOMEN
N.S.W. REDUCTION
CONSIDERATION BY PARTIES
(Received April 29, 11.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. The recently declared basic wage is to be submitted to the United Australia Party and the United Country Party for consideration. Similar action was taken previously by the Bavin Government, when a reduction declared by the Court was not enforced. This undertaking was given by the Acting Premier, Mr. M. F. Bruxner, in the Legislative Assembly in response to a Labour motion that a law should be passed to prevent a reduction of the female basic wage and to enable the State Industrial Commission to declare a higher wage. The New South Wales State Industrial Commission, in its living wage declaration last Saturday, increased the male adult basic wage by 6d a week to 695; but the rate for women employees, based on a new standard, is now fixed at 35s 6d, compared with 137s hitherto. Following strong protests against a reduction in women's wages by the Industrial Commission, the Retail Traders' Association recommended its members and the trade generally to make no change in the existing wages of female workers.
