STUDENT AFFAIRS

ANNUAL MEETING

SOME CHANGES MADE

Several matters of importance to university students throughout the Dominion- were discussed last evening when the annual meeting of the New Zealand University- Students' Association was held. The retiring president, Mr. R. J. Larkin, LL.B. (Victoria), presided and delegates from the five university colleges were present.

Presenting the annual report to the meeting the president said the association had had an exceedingly busy year. He thought he could say that from year to year the association was gaining in prestige, not only in' the eyes of the students, but also of the general public. , Mr. Larkin also referred to the value resulting from such tours as that of the New Zealand University Rugby' team to Japan and the New Zealand University hockey team to Fiji during the past year.

The anomalies in degree fees charged by the University of New Zealand had received consideration during the year, the president said. Nothing had been arranged, however, as the matter was still in a state of flux.

The report was-adopted

A letter was received from the retiring registrar of the University of New Zealand (Mr. E. T. Norris), expressing appreciation of the tributes paid by the association on his retirement, and thanking members for their gift.

Mr. A. T. S. . McGhie. (Victoria) moved that the annual levy paid by colleges to the association should be raised from £1 to £2 per fifty members, and after a considerable amount of discussion it was agreed that the levy should be advanced to £1 5s for the incoming year and to £1 10s in the following year.

It was decided, on the motion of Mr. McGhie, that the association should consider arranging the selection of a New Zealand University debating team to tour abroad not later than 1937.

A new constitution was adopted, the object? of the association being outlined, as follows: (1) To represent the. views of past and present students of New Zealand nationally and internationally; C 2) to maintain an effective co-operation vith students in New Zealand and in other countries; (3) to promote and maintain the welfare of all students; (4) to maintain effective co-operation between the various sporting organisations of the students of the University of New Zealand; (5) to preserve all records connected with the life of the University of New Zealand likely to prove of historical interest.

The constitution also provides that the annual general meeting of the association' shall be held at the same time and place as the tournament in each year and shall' be comprised of three representatives of ■ each constituent organisation, one of whom may. be the resident member for that organisation.

The autonomy of the constituent organisations is preserved under a clause which provides ; that no decision of the executive or standing, committees which specifically affects any or one particular constituent organisation shall be binding unless and until it is ratified by that organisation.
