SMASH ON BRIDGE

FIVE PERSONS INJURED

Smashing into a one-car bridge over the Waitohu stream, a mile north of Otaki,' at 12.10 yesterday morning, a sedan car was impaled from end to end by the handrail of the bridge before falling into the .stream below. The rail pierced the radiator of the car, passed beneath the bonnet, and over the engine, broke through the dashboard and front seat, and stopped against the back seat.

The persons injured were:— Alfred Lark, a car cleaner, of 21 Jessie Street, Wellington, the driver of the car, concussion, cut forehead, and bruised hip.

Robert Lark, aged five, both legs broken, and cuts.

Mrs. Kate McSweeney, 66 Vivian Street, Wellington, cuts on head and neck, and abrasions on back.

Miss Rata Castle, 66 Vivian Street. Wellington, factory worker, cut right knee, bruised left thigh, and shock.

Kenneth Douglas Crooks, labourer, injuries to right shoulder, cut back, and severe injuries to chest.

The car was travelling north, and after striking the rail fell into the stream. It landed on its side, partly in a pool and partly on a gravel bank. A male passenger who was pinnedl underneath the car was able to attract the attention of a passing motorist.

The injured people were given firstaid treatment in Otaki, and afterwards were taken to the Wellington Public Hospital by the Free Ambulance.

This afternoon they were all reported to be in a, satisfactory condition.
