COST OF CEMENT
(To the Editor.)
Sir,—Being a smal contractor for all kinds of finishing jobs, paths, fences, courtyards, etc., I am interested in "Motorist's" letter in "The Post." Could you say whether he is correct about the price of cement? I always buy my supplies locally, but if 49s on every ton less freight can be saved by getting cement from Australia it is foolish for me and other small builders to continue buying here. If "Motorist" is correct, would you tell me whether there is a restriction on the importation of cement from Australia? Like other jobbing contractors, I have no proper way of making market inquiries, but it looks as if it would pay us to look into the matter. In my case it would mean a saving of about £9 a month, and that might just be the profit on a job.—l am, etc., INTERESTED.
' [We have no further information on the price of cement in Australia, or the freight and other costs. There is no embargo on cement imports, imt there is a duty of 8d a hundredweight under the British preferential tariff.—Ed.]
