EXHAUSTIVE TEST
THE SPAHLINCER VACCINE
(From "The Post's" Representative.) LONDON, March T.
Already Spahlinger vaccine has been tested under the supervision of. the Government of Northern Ireland, and results have been very satisfactory. According to a special correspondent i of the "Manchester Guardian," the British Ministry of Agriculture has now decided to make a test of the vaccine. This will take several years to.comP An' investigation will also be conducted to determine whether the vaccine can be produced in sufficient quantities to enable it to be put into general use among herds throughout the country, including the whole of the Northwestern Counties. When the vaccine has been prepared (says the correspondent) a preliminary test will be carried out with it at the Ministry's premises at Weybridge, Surrey, and'if this experiment ; gives satisfactory results the co-operation of a number of dairy farmers will be ■ sought in conducting the large-scale test It is also proposed to ascertain whether revaccination of cattle at any time is desirable.'This point has never been determined. It is'believed that if the large-scale test is successful and if the vaccine can be produced in .the necessary quantities the Ministry may consult the industry on the desirability of issuing an order for the compulsory vaccination of all calves with the preparation, which is for the prevention and not for the cure of bovine tuberculosis, a disease that is estimated to cost farmers more than £1,000,000 annually.
