RURAL L POPULATIONS
PRELIMINARY RETURNS
North Island rural districts predominate •in the. latest ' preliminary Census . returns, which were issued today by the Government' Statistician. With the' eighteen, returns available, the total number of districts now.accounted for is forty-nine, mainly "town districts, counties, and, small boroughs.
Murchison County,; relic of the old mining days in the Nelson Province, but now largely given to dairying and sheep-farming, heads the latest list with an increase of 521 on the figures taken in the 1926 Census, this buoyancy j of population probably being due in some measure to the stimulated interest in gold-prospecting during the depression. The population is now 1916. Prospecting for gold, chiefly by unemployed men, is responsible for the increase of 259 in the Southland borough of Alexandra.
Coming nearer home, Stratford Borough has risen from 3343 in 1926 to 3753 in 1936, and Whakatane County, in the Bay of Plenty, 240 miles southeast of Auckland, shows an appreciable increase of 318, which is followed by Patea Borough with an increase of 257.
Other and more modest increases have been recorded in the. Wairarapa Valley borough of Grey town (107), Waipukurau County (48), Waverley Town District (47), Lumsden, the Southland town district and railway junction (9), TinwaM Town District in the Ashburton County (18), the Southland borough of Winton (19), and Martinborough Borough (1). Featherston Borough has just failed to hold its own, the present population of 1048 being a drop of one person. Kaitangata Borough, the Otago coalproducing district, has the largest decrease—l7l.
