FAREWELL FUNCTION
FOR PROBATION OFFICER
Mr. T. P. Mills, who is retiring from the position of Probation Officer for Wellington district, was. recently tendered a farewell by the head office staff. c>*Jie Prisons Department. Mr. B. L. Dallard, Under-Secretary of the Justice Department and Chief Probation Officer, in presenting Mr. Mills, on behalf of headquarters staff, with a travelling bag, spoke in glowing terms of the splendid work which Mr. Mills had performed over a period of twenty-three years. Mr. Mills possessed qualities, Mr. ...Dallard said, which are essential to the Probation Officer who desires to succeed in his work. His patience, sympathy, firmness when necessary, and his thorough understanding of human nature, had been the means of placing a great number of men on the straight path.
Mr. D. A. Mackintosh, Deputy Chief Probation Officer, also referred in appreciative terms to the manner in which, Mr. Mills had attended to his duties and thanked him for the -assistance he had always given to headquarters. In thanking the Departmental officials for their gift and good wishes, Mr. Mills referred to the great pleasure and encouragement he had received during the past few weeks through personal visits and letters of thanks received from a large number of men who had at one time come under his jurisdiction and who were now good citizens and doing well for themselves.
Mr. Mills left by the Wanganella today for New South Wales, where he intends to live for some time with relatives.
