DRUNK IN CHARGE
TAXI-DRIVER. FINED
LICENCE SUSPENDED
Pleading guilty to a charge of being intoxicated in charge of a car, John Ferguson Mac Lean, a taxi-drivef, aged 23, appeared in the Magistrate's Court today before Mr. W. F. Stilwell, S.M.
Sub-Inspector C. E. Roach stated that at 4.20 a.m. yesterday a constable on duty in Jervois Quay saw the accused asleep in a taxi parked about eight feet from the kerb. . When roused the accused made an attempt to start the car., He was taken to the Taranaki Street Police Station, where an examination by a doctor resulted in. his being pronounced intoxicated.
Mr. C. H. Arndt, who appeared for the accused, asid that the case was a most unfortunate one, because although Mac Lean was technically in charge of the car, he' was not driving it. He had been working late, and at 11 p.m. on Saturday had gone to a friend's party, where he had had some beer. He had left shortly after 1 a.m., and had driven from Roseneath. When he had reached Jervois Quay the fresh air had affected him, as it often did people coming out from indoors after having had liquor.
The Magistrate, said that in the interests of the public the penalty had to be a heavy one.
The accused was convicted and fined £10, and his licence was endorsed and suspended for twelve months.
