CHURCH AND STATE

CONFLICT IN GERMANY

FURTHER BLOW AT CATHOLIC YOUTH

OFFICIALS ARRESTED

United Tress Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. (Received February 12, 10.15 a.m.) BERLIN, February 11. The Church versus the State conflict is again coming into the foreground. Secret police struck another blow at Catholic youth organisations when they arrested Monsignor Volker, the president, and also about fifty other important officials. It is believed that the. arrests reflect Nazi impatience to compromise with the Church on the youth question, and are regarded as a step towards suppression of all lay Catholic activity. Two of the largest churches In Munich were crowded to hear Cardinal Faulhaber denounce the antiCatholic tendencies and Nazism and the un-Christian influence that is brought to bear on youthful members of the Nazi Party. The sermon was relayed from the church in which the Cardinal preached, and thousands waited to see the Cardinal and the exCrown Prince Rupprecht of Bavaria arrive. The streets were impassable. Isolated individuals who attempted to sHout "Heil Hitler" were quickly suppressed.
