COST OF A BRIDGE

SOLUTION OF PROBLEM

(Special to the "Evening Post.") MASTERTON, This Day. Though it was concerned primarily with another matter, a deputation from the Masterton" Borough Council which waited on yesterday's meeting of the Masterton County Council paved the way for what may be a simple solution of the dispute between the two bodies regarding the basis of contribution towards the cost of the construction of the Riiamahanga River Bridge at Opaki. When requesting the co-operation of the county in connection with the Waipoua River flood-protection scheme, the Mayor, Mr. T. Jordan, surprised members of the county by suggesting that the borough would shoulder the full cost of lengthening the Columba Road Bridge if the county would release the borough from its contribution towards the cost of the Ruamahanga Bridge. The deputation consisted of Mr. Jor* dan and Councillors Trevor Beetham, W. Kemp, W. H. Judd, and A. Rippon. When the deputation withdrew tho council discussed the matter in committee and decided, subject to the county solicitor approving of the proposals and to the borough agreeing to certain detail matters, including the provision of a stock route from the saleyards to Queen Street, to agree to the Mayor's offer.
