ROWING
INTERPROVINCIAL1 RACE
POSSIBILITY OF A "GATE"
One of the greatest handicaps under which the association conducting the interprovincial rowing eights has to labour is that no "gate" can be obtained from those viewing the race. A Wanganui enthusiast has suggested to a "Post" reporter that this year, however, it would be possible to obtain one at Wanganui, where the next contest is to be held at Easter. His plan is that the race should be staged over the old championship sculling course which was used, in the days of the Tressider - Stanbury - Webb clashes. The course, which is three and a quarter miles in length, is surrounded by an amphitheatre of hills, and since these are fenced, and on private property, it would thus be possible to ensure a gate which would do much towards placing the interprovincial eights' contest on a sound financial footing.
The course has one bend in it (near the start) but this would not detract from the desirability of holding the race over this part of the river. If any objection was raised, by the competing crews the event could be rowed in lanes similar to those used in contests on the Thames. It should be remembered in this connection that the challenge eights held on the Yarra River at the time of the Melbourne Centenary,, celebrations were staged over a course in which there were two bends. No exception was taken to this.
