OPIUM SMOKING
FINES TOTAL £322

CHRISTCHURCH, This Day.
Following .a police raid on premises in Ferry Road on Saturday two Chinese appeared in the Magistrate's Court on charges connected with opium smoking, and a third was charged with being unlawfully on the premises: Fines totalling £322 were imposed by Mr. E. C. Levvey, S.M. Ah-Yee was charged: (1) That, being the occupier of the premises, he permitted them to be used for the smoking of prepared opium; (2) that he was found in possession of prepared opium; (3) that he was found in possession of utensils used for the purpose of smoking prepared opium. He was fined £200 on the first charge and £50 on each of the other charges. It was stated that he had been fined £100 four years ago. On three charges Yee See was fined a total of £20. For being found on the premises Ah Low was fined £2.
