GABRIELLA IDLE
NO LABOUR OFFERING
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) NEW PLYMOUTH, January 24.
Calls for labour to work the cargo in. the steamer Gabriella, which arrived at New Plymouth from Brisbane today were unanswered, and the vessel lay idle all day. The Gabriella is manned by a crew under the licence recently granted by the Australian Government. The Union Company's office said neither union nor non-union labour was available. Another call would be made tomorrow. An official of the Watersiders' Union made no statement, beyond claiming that all union labour was engaged on other ships. The Gabriella was scheduled to leave for Wanganui tomorrow.
A Press Association message received this afternoon states that the New Plymouth watersiders declined to unload the Gabriella when a call was made for labour this morning. The vessel is being slowly unloaded by one small gang of volunteer workmen. The unionists are not hostile and are watching the volunteers goodhumouredly. . It is understood the move was not made by direction of Dominion headquarters but that that it is one to uphold general union principles. me Gabriella has coal and general cargo.
