FIRE IN CITY
FIVE ENGINES ATTEND
Five appliances from the Central, Wellington North, and Wellington South Fire Stations attended an out- j break of fire which was noticed at about 1.31 p.m. today in premises it the corner of Wakefield and Taranaki Streets occupied jointly by Manthel Motors, H. W. Clarke, manufacturers' representative, and H. C. Urlwin, whose electrical' warehouse occupied the first floor. Damage was confined almost entirely to the premises of Mantee". Motors, whose garage, workshop, and showroom occupy the ground floor.
The fire had its origin in a room on the mezzanine floor on the north side of the building, used as a staff-room by Manthel Motors, and this, with its contents, suffered severe damage by fire. The roof in the front portion of the building was also damaged, and a number of cars stored in the vicinity received minor damage to their paintwork.
On the arrival of the brigade two deliveries were quickly prepared, but it was found necessary to use only one of these, the fire being extinguished without much difficulty. The engines were very quickly on the scene, the premises on which the fire started being only a shcrt distance from the Central Station.
