ENGLISH BLOODSTOCK
BROOD MARES SELL WELL
(From "The Post's" Representative.) LONDON, December 7.
I Newmarket sales of in-foal mares have been interesting breeders and purchasers on several days this week. The top price realised was 4400gns, which was given by Major Kerr for the five-year-old Solario mare Dona Sol who is from Sister-in-Law and is in foal to the Derlby winner Blenheim. After an initial offer of lOOOgns, Major Basil Kerr, Prince Aly Khan, and Lady James Douglas's manager (Major Booth) became interested. It was not until. 4400gns was reached that Major Kerr was announced as the purchaser. He is the Duke of Westminster's agent, and it is hoped that this purchase indicates a revival in the interests of the Eaton Hall Stud. Next on the list was 3900gns, which Mr. J. A. Dewar gave for Cradle Song (13 years), a brown mare by Hurry On from Verve, covered by Blandford. Competitors for this mare were Mr. Dewar, Major Beatty, and Mr Martin Benson. The hammer fell on Mr. Dewar's bid. Cradle Song was owned by Major Shirley. The next highest figure was 3000 guineas, which George Duller gave for Mark Time, on behalf of the Hon. Dorothy Paget. This brilliant three-year-old filly by Black Watch—Little Mark was the property of Mrs. Dawson Waugh, wife of the well-known Newmarket trainer. Black Watch once belonged to the late Mr. J. B. Keid, of New Zealand. _ After Mr. Clarence Hailey had secured Barrack Law for 500gns. Daughter-in-Law. the dam of several good winners, including Ben Marshall and Fair Diana, was sold for 1050 ens to Mr. James A. de Rothschild's trainer, F. Pratt. Ben Marshall was bought for abroad by the British Bloodstock Agency at 900gns. \ All except Mazurka, withdrawn at 1350gns, were disposed of by the Lavington Stud, twelve lots making an aggregate of 8715gns. ■ ■ • BOUGHT FOR FEANCE. At 750gns the Ascot Gold Vase winner Maid of Perth (11 years), who is carrying a foal to Fairway was allowed to go to Mr. Frank Carter for export to France. A lovely mare and well bred, she is, of the kind that English breeders cannot afford to lose. Seradella, who won the" Newbusy Cup and the Great Yorkshire Handicap (twice), was another cheap lot. as at 320gns she fell to the bid of Mr. Cooper Bland, who (says Sporting Life") will get several times that amount for the foal she is carrying to Colorado's brother Caerleon. Mr Carter bought Spiral, daughter of Spion Kop, for 380gns. Senor S. J. Unzue's five-year-old Diomedes mare Spirituelle 11, who is from Spiqn Kop's daughter Spicebox, and is in foal to Town Guard, was run up to 1450gns, at which figure the French buyer M. Coulon just outlasted Mr. Watson to obtain possession. Daughter-in-Law. a 15-year-old mare went at 1050gns to Mr. James de Rothschild's trainer, F. Pratt. For the same amount Lady Fitzwilliam bought Runaway Match. Lady Yule received 1950gns from Sir Richard Brooke, the Worcestershide breeder, for Papyrus's daughter, Campanile. RUSSIA IN MARKET. Mr. J. J. Parkinson, of The Curragh, has been commissioned to buy about 200 horses for shipment to Russia this month, and towards that number the famous Irish trainer has already acquired about thirty. He made further deals at Newmarket this week. The average price paid has not so far reached a spectacular figure. The Russians are believed to be particularly keen to acquire stock that carries a Hurry On strain. Hurry On was the greatest of all the horses owned by the late Lord Woolavmgton; One of Mr. Parkinson's purchases was, a well-grown colt foal by Milton— Aylsham, for 500gns. Among several lots taken to go to Poland is the Gold Vase winner Gainslaw, and the son of Winalot should make a successful sire there.. . Offers of 2200gns were not accepted for the Blandford mare Roshun Ara, who is in foal to Felstead, or for Telranella, but Tctranella s filly toal by Dastur went to C. Pratt at DOOgns after an interesting duel with Prince Aly Khan. n . , . . Four young matrons were listed by Lord Rosebery, and following the purchase of Spion Kop's three-year-old daughter Copia by the Office dv Pur Sang for 260gns, the Anglo-Irish Agency went to 600gns to obtain Indiscretion. Mr. George Lambton was in the market for Stefan the Great's daughter Stefariechti, who is in foal to Cameronian, and obtained her for 530 guineas. The Mac Abbess, who is a half-sister to the Chester Vase winner Pinxit, and is in foal to the French Two Thousand Guineas winner Dark Lantern, fell to Mr. Becker for 290 guineas. ■ " The British Bloodstock Agency, bidding for the Argentine Minister of War, went to 250gns to buy Diomedes's seven-year-old daughter Symbol, who is in foal to Apelle; and a few lots later the Anglo-Irish Agency gave 550gns for Grey Twinkle, a 12-year-old Tetrarch mare who is standing to a March service by the dual Ascot Gold Cup winner Trimdon. The Anglo-Irish Agency were again in the market .for the grey Puttenden mare Bag o' Tricks, who was knocked down to them at 155gns, and at 60gns the same firm purchased her grey colt foal by The Black Abbot. During the five days 697 horses were disposed of for 213,279gn5. At the corresponding sales last year the total was 202,780gns—an increase of 10,499gns this year.
