PETONE DEFENCE CLUB

The Petone Rifle Club fired the final competition, counting for the second handicap series, the day's shooting also counting for the Burridge Cup and Longfield aggregate. The range for the day »was' 900 yards. Shooting conditions were extremely difficult. A rear "fishtail" wind of varying strength called for quick judgment and quick shooting, and so sudden were the changes that "outers' and even complete "misses" appeared on almost all .score cards. The 900----yard distance is the longest range fired over by rifle clubs at Trentham, and the club standard for each range shoot is 44 out of the possible 50. On Saturday " several good single range scores were registered; but none of the members were able to return outstanding doubles. R. H. Nicholl and T. Chapman each scored 48, followed by J. Carter and T. B. Richards 47 each, and J. Devine 46. These were brilliant gun scores under the difficult conditions. R. C. Barkle made his firstappearance this season, and looked like returning top score for the day. He scored 44 on the first occasion, but his last shot in the second shoot .was blown off the target, and a possible 47 was defeated. The outstanding aggregates off the gun were secured by R. H. Nicholl and T. Chapman with 87 each, followed by R. C. Barkle and J. Devine and J. C. Carter 86 each, J. C. Ashman and W. J. Mclver 84 each. The final leading positions in the second handicap series are as follows: — A Grade—P. Stewart 275, W. M. Jackson 272, W. H. BaUinger 268, T. McNab 268, T. W. Warburton 267, O. Pedersen 267, J. C. Ashman 267. B and C Grades—J. Devine 275, J. Colquhoun 274, T. F. Cooper 269, C. Lusty 263, C. E. Tanner 266. Next Saturday the range will again be 900 yards, the shooting to count for the Burridge Cup, Longfield aggregate, and for ammunition trophies. The following are the leading scores: 900 900* Yds. Yds.
