MOUNTAIN SPLIT OPEN

VILLAGES DESTROYED

United I'ress Association—By Electric Tele- " graph—Copyright. CHENGTU, December 25. Reports from southern Szechuan indicated that an earthquake on December 18 destroyed numerous villages and caused a death-roll that may reach thousands, the primitive mountain dwellings of Lolo tribesmen being the chief sufferers. The inaccessibility of the devastated area made it, impossible to determine the exact extent of the disaster which included reports of a mountain split open for a mile and avalanches which dammed streams and turned fertile valleys into lakes. Szechuan is a.province in the extreme south of China on the borders of Tibet. It covers an area of 218,533 square miles and is drained by the Yalung, Mm, To, and Kialing Rivers. The surface is divided into two main sections, the Red Basin, a fertile area in the east and centre, and the remainder, consisting of a series of mountainous masses attaining an altitude of 16,000 feet In the, west and becoming less elevated in 'the east, north, and south. Chengtu is the capital. The population is over 52,000,000.
