BOWLING

TOUBNEY OPENED -

CHRISTMAS RINKS

SECTION PLAY r*'!

Although" light rain damped the grass during last night and the sky was overcast this morning, the four greens used for the flrst three rounds in the section play of the Wellington Bowling Centre's Christmas rinks tournament were in good order when the jacks were tossed up at 9 a.m. today. There had not. been sufficient rain to do more than damp the surface and the well-kept greens were reasonably fast for the first roll up. The Lyall Bay, Wellington, Kelburn, and Newlown greens were used, ten rinks, or forty players, meeting at each.. A time limit of three hours was placed on the games so that the first round was completed shortly after noon and the second commenced at 1 o'clock this afternoon. The third round will be played in the late afternoon, the starting time being set down as 4.15. Another three rounds will be played tomorrow, and play will be carried to the ninth round on Saturday. Section winners, section ties, and winners of seven or more games will qualify for post-sectional play after the nine games have been completed. The games in the "post-sec-tional play will be of twenty-one heads, and play will be on the suddendeath principle.' • < - Some of the games played this morning showed a"" wide margin in the scoring, but- the majority were reasonably close contests and several resolved into keen struggles for supremacy. A particularly interesting finish was witnessed at the Wellington green where Brighting (Hataitai) and Snfoth (Kelburn) tied on the twenty-first and had "to play an extra head to decide the match. Smith's men placed two good ones, and when the skips went to the mat Smith's problem. was to place a saver, and Brighting was given the task of cutting out the shot and replacing it with his own. bowl. Smith was too strong with both bowls and Brighting missed with his first. His last shot, however, was just what he required, and the Kelburn shot rolled put to make room for the Hataitai wood, Brighting winning, 19-18. FIRST ROUND.
