TEMPORARY IMPROVEMENT

Special forecast for; Wellington:— South-easterly winds at Brat moderate to strong but decreasing. Winds later becoming variable. Weather overcast at first with further showers, but soon improving. The general forecast for the Dominion as a whole, issued at noon.today, is for westerly winds to the, north' of Kawhia and • Tauranga. Elsewhere winds will be southerly or south-east-erly in direction. These will be strong at first in the Cook Strait area, but decreasing, and elsewhere, will be moderate. Winds in most distscts will tenti northerly later. A temporary improvement in the weather is probable, but conditions will still.be rather unsettled with rain at' times in most districts. Temperatures will be cool to moderate.. .. ' The depression which crossed the Dominion yesterday is now located to the,eastward and a slight anticyclone is;situated over the South Island.. Further depressions, however, are advancing across the Tasman Sea. Winds have been moderate to strong generally and were blowing from some northerly quarter yesterday about and to the.north of Cook Strait. Since last night,; however, a change to southerlies has occurred as far north as Cape Egmont. and Napier, westerlies ruling at 9 ajn. today, in places further north. The weather has been very unsettled, dull, and misty, with almost general rain. There have been some further heavy falls in various parts of the North Island, but in the eastern and southern districts of the South Island there have been only light and scattered falls! The southerly change has brought cooler temperatures than have prevailed for a considerable time.

Auckland had a wet day yesterday with a strong north-easterly wind. The rain ceased in the evening and since last night it has been cloudy. The wind by this morning had turned to a north-westerly breeze.

■ Wellington had a dull and misty day ! with fairly continuous rain' which was heavy during the night. A moderate northerly wind prevailed yesterday, but there was a change to a.southerly about 9 p.m. and the latter freshened later. No sunshine was recorded yesterday and the maximum temperature was one of 67.4 degrees. The rainfall at Kelburn totalled 165 points'; but that in Lower Hutt less than half that amount, 81 points. Christchurch had a continuance of dull weather with occasional showers Which totalled 13 points of rain. A light north-easterly wind prevailed until 11.30 a.m., and a moderate southwesterly thereafter.

In Dunedin it was also mostly dull, a southerly wind prevailing and freshening during, the afternoon. Showers totalling four points of rain fell during the night. ..-.;■•*■•-. ;' ;
