GERMAN ARRESTED

OFFICIAL SECRETS CHARGE

It was learned recently that Dr. Hermann Gortz, a German, had been in custody in England for over a week on a charge under the Official Secrets Act. It is understood that the charge refers to the K.A.F. aerodrome at Manston, near Brbadstairs, says the "Daily Telegraph." .

Dr. Gortz was, arrested at Harwich on behalf of the Kent police and taken to Margate, where he appeared before a Magistrate on November 9. He was then remanded until the following Monday, when he was further remanded. The proceedings will be in camera.

Dr. Gortz, when charged, appeared before a Magistrate of the Cinque Ports Petty Sessions, sitting in a private room at Margate Town Hall. Each time the proceedings occupied only a few minutes. .

He was brought to the town in. a Metropolitan police van and left Margate in the same van. He was then taken to Brixton Prison.

Scotland^ Yard officers have been working with the Kent Constabulary in investigations in the Margate and Broadstairs area. When asked for information, the Deputy Clerk to * the Margate Magistrates said, "You may take it from me that the next hearing will be in camera."

An official of the German Embassy stated that he had received from a Dr. Gortz a letter asking the Embassy to send him a list of German-speaking solicitors. "Until I received the letter," said the official, "I had never heard of Dr. Gortz."

"We get letters quite frequently from Germans asking us to let them have the names of German-speaking solicitors, and therefore I took' no more notice of this letter than of the others. The letter was written from Brlxton Prison.

"Dr. Gortz said that he was in gaol on a serious charge, but he did not say what the charge was. In accordance with our usual practice we are sending to him a list of German-speak-ing solicitors,, and that is all we know about the matter."

Dr. Gortz and a young woman, said to be his niece, occupied a furnished house in Stanley Road, Broadstairs, during September. They were frequently seen together on a motor-cycle, the girl driving and the iman riding pillion. |

Dr. Gortz is described as being between forty and forty-flye years of age.
