RAILWAY CHRISTMAS

HAPPY TEA PARTY

The year 1935 has proved to be a better railways year than recent years have been; and the Christmas celebration yesterday afternoon, at the customary. annual afternoon tea at Head Office, was appropriately jubilant. Mr. G. H. Mackley, General Manager, presided over a gathering at which the sexes seemed to be about equally represented, but the decorative and hospitable hand of the more important "ifex was plainly evident in the balloon adornments, the edibles, and in the service. The male speakers competed with each other in paying compliments to the feminine side of the establishment, but the Assistant General Manager, Mr. -E. C^sey, was an easy winner when he pointed out that though 1935, as a recovery year, had entailed strenuous work by the staff,' the typist and stenographer section of it looked younger than last Christmas. Prior to this the General Manager had reviewed the year and expressed thanks to all sections of the staff for loyal co-operation. For the ladies Miss M. Mawhinneyv (secretary to the General Manager) and Miss D. R. McQueen (supervisor of the typing and stenographic staff) replied; other executive heads also spoke. Mr. Mackley presented Mr. J. M. Wood, who is retiring from the staff office, with an eight-day clock. The impression left by these annual gatherings at Railways Head Office is always that the staff is a happy family, equally successful in work or play.
