MESURINA'S HACK SPRINT

Though Mesurina finally won the Mangarewa Hack Handicap comforti ably by- a length and a half, the finish was a most exhilarating spectacle with the situation undergoing fast changes over the last quarter. Just after the field had landed in the straight Layinia drew out and was being hailed victor, but she weakened at the distance, and several horses swooped "down on her, among whom was Mesurina, coming .through fast, and Mesurina continued his effort to score an attractive victory. ' . ..' .

It was Mesurina's third recent success and he is obviously ' a much-im-proved pelding who is likely to go on to better deeds. He is a three-year-old son of Arausio and the Lackham— Hymarty mare Royal Line, a halfsister to Curie, and closely related to King Mart, Early Dawn, Kilmiss, Rascal, etc., and he is owned by his breeder, Mr. F. Ormond, who also captured yesterday's main event with Werohia. Despite his recent form he returned a dividend of very nearly double figures.

Blue Tiger, also at a good price, came home solidly for second prize but though he had been.half a dozen horses-back, -iris .most- ofc-Lhe^running'

when he challenged strongly and got up to separate the two three-year-olds. He is a five-year-old Grandcourt gelding who is well worth remembering. Corroboree, despite his receipt of over a stone in the weights, proved less able than Shu to stand up.to the game of cut-throat, and he is not yet a match for the best class of his age. Chaste was the only other of the field to come on at the close, finishing fast just a head off in fourth place. There was then a gap of four or five lengths to the remainder, who were headed by Unexpected, Darecourt, and Romp Along.
