HERITAGE AT HIS BEST

■ Heritage gave a beautifully smooth exhibition of galloping in winning the Oete Handicap, and as he carried 9.4 and ran the six furlongs in. lmin 12 l-ssec his performance was brimful of merit. He is obviously a much better horse on a firm track than he is on a yielding track such as \ encounr tered at' Riccar.ton. His success yesterday will hearten; those who intend still to remain with him in his Great Northern Derby engagement next month.

Heritage was well ridden by his customary - pilot, P. Atkins. Though he did not begin so smartly as the majority, he was able to accept the opportunity of moving up along the fence when the opening came and at the end of a little over a furlong he was on the inner of Big Dook running third to" Royal Routine and Sunny Maid. Royal Routine drew out in the straight, but when asked to make his challenge Heritage swept up with his long, low strides and won going away by nearly two lengths/ Royal Routine improved as might be expected with his recent racing at Feilding. Despite the long straight he has often done well at Woodville, and he was a winner there last December.

Big Doofc; was still going on in third place at the finish, but he was two lengths further away. Just at the close he was fast, catching the second horse. False Scent was a handy fourth, just in front of Sunny Maid, and Bodyline and West Tor followed. Cullus was prominent early but dropped back, the reason: being apparent when he came in, as his saddle was up on his neck.
