DARGAVILLE MEETING

FIRST DAY AT AVONDALE

CUP TO GAY BRONEY

(Special from "Early Bird.")

AUCKLAND, December.s.

Tin Lap and Ballymoney pulled hard cut ir. front ir- the Tokft Toka iiandicap and they 14m first a.id. second, with Racette, a big favourite, finishing fast in third place, a head in front-of .Ringshot. Ballymoney was rather unlucky.

Solomon led the Hobson Handicap field to the distance and then Tybali joined him, the latter winning more decisively than the half-length margin indicated. Adalene was a good third, but her showing was disappointing, the hard ground probably finding her out. The Maiden Handicap produced a smart galloper in Lornacre, who led all the way. Gay and Gold went with him to the home turn, where Needful and Overdue were handy, ahead of a bunch, Lilbert and Valmint being wide out. Lornacre was not troubled to win very comfortably from Needful, with Nicoderrius and Orefield next. Lornacro « a three-year-old brother to Vera Acre, who won a similar race at EUerslie last Monday. Needful made a promising showing, but Nicodemus was the surprise packet, being last'at the end of the first furlong. AVOCA HANDICAP. Scotland was the unlucky runner in the Avoca Handicap, for he lost several lengths at the barrier, and then finished, fourth, within a length and a half of the winner. Sinking Fund was clear when the field had settled down, with Crooning, Impasto, and Roman Mascot bunched just behind. Crooning got to the front inside the distance and won nicely from Impasto, Sinking Fund, and Scotland. Coronis ran disappointingly. . GAT BRONEY'S SUCCESS. Gay Broneywas at a great price on the win machine andat heavy odds on for a place when he put in an irresistible dash in the last furlong to win the Dargaville Cup narrowly from the favourite Sir Abb. Early in the contest Miss Lv went to the front and she was joined at the six furlongs by Prince Colossus, with Sir Abb just in behind. So they ran to the home turn, where Imamint, Master Norval, and Maine flashed into the picture, Gay Broney only having Psychologist behind him. Sir Abb went to the front at the distance and looked all over, a winner until Gay Broney swooped down on him. In a keen struggle over the final fifty yards Gay Broney won by a head. Prince Colossus hung on for third place, to pay a liberal place dividend, while Miss Lv was fourth. The rest were well back. : ' Gay Broney ran up to his best form. He and Tybalt, the winner of the Hobson Handicap, are the first Auckland Cup candidates to win since the weights appeared this week Prince Colossus should te all the better for the race. KAIHTJ HACK HURDLES/ King's Archer and Lap Up were together over the last six furlongs in the Kaihu Hack Hurdles race,- but- the latter spoiled a splendid chance by bungling the second to last fence, ieav ing King's Archer to win all out by a couple of lengths. Gascille was a fair third and the early pacemaker Tea Chat was fourth, well back.. Orenda fell at - the-penultimate obstacle. Lord Val was handily placel down the back when a bad jump sent him back. . ' THE OTHER EVENTS. Gay Chief shot out of the barriet very smartly in the Nursery , Handicap and was soon two lengths A dea;of Marjory Daw and Surview. . At the end oia furlong the trio were on terms. Surview went to the front aiyj Gay Chief tackled him at the distance and went on to win handsomely with Marjory Daw a moderate third and Surella and Queen Brierly- next, the last-named, finishing fast. .burview bled during .the race.. Hunting Maid and King Tut were the slowest away in the final event, but they both finished in the ™oney; Teddy Boy Hope Lass, and Valrent were running abreast crossing, the top and into, the straight,, with King, Tut, Impellant. and Huskie just behind. Vigorously ridden, King Tut reached the front and held on to win decisively The weather conditions were ideal. The attendance was fair, and the trade in splendid order. The totahsator investments were £10,232, against- £3420 on the first day last year,, when the meeting was held at Dargaville. . RESULTS IN DETAIL.
