NEW LEASE OF LIFE
BUSY ENGLAND
NEW ZEALAND'S TRADE
Industries are booming; in fact the whole country seems to have taken on a new lease of life, said Mr. G. Shirtcliffe, of Wellington, when referring to England in an interview with a "Post" representative yesterday on his return by the Tamaroa from London. Exports, he said, had increased, and unemployment had decreased noticeably.
Mr. Shirtcliffe spent a good deal of time motoring in England, Scotland, and Wales, land he said he was very jnuch impressed with the apparent prosperity and contentment of the people. One heard very little in the way -of labour troubles, and the Government was spending huge sums of L.wiiey in slum clearance under a fiveyear programme. Also a great deal of money was being spent in opening up new by-pass roads to divert traffic from the towns and cities.
When commenting on New Zealand's export trade to England, Mr. Shirtcliffe adyocated improved methods of distribution and advertising for butter and cheese. "It doesn't seem to me that our butter and cheese are sufficiently advertised," he said. "A certain amount is. being done, but in relation to the huge amount of produce, going into the country I don't think it is sufficient. It is pleasing :to know, however, that this year very few complaints have been received regarding our butter and cheese."
Mr. Shirtcliffe added that New Zealand's meat export trade was on a satisfactory basis.
