FOUR NOTICE RACES

NEWCOMERS AT WOODVILLE

The Woodville programme of tomorrow and Saturday provides four novice races, two each day. The Maiden Stakes tomorrow is a pure maiden race, in accordance with the definition in the Rules of Racing; but the Trial Plate conditions include winners after date of entry, subject to penalties. As it happens none of the latter field have yet earned such penalty, though Conversion, Myriam, or Hippolyta might do so by winning the earlier race. On the second day the first of the two novice events is similar to the second event tomorrow; and the other is for horses who have not at time of starting won a flat race of the value of more than £50 to the winner or flat races of a collective value exceeding £100. Several,of the candidates for tomorrow's Maiden Stakes are not yet well known to the general racing public. The horses engaged in the Trial Plate, however, have all raced, and most of them have given some indication of possessing, or lacking, ability. Barley Almond is one who will be having her first start. She is a three-year-old bay filly by Lackham from the Heather Mixture mare Butter Scotch, a useful mare raced first by the late Mr. C. F. Vallance, and afterwards by J. Griffith on lease from her owner. Barley Almond was bred by Mrs. A. McDonald, who formerly trained Butter Scotch, and she is now owned by Mr. R. J. Macdonald, who has acquired her from her breeder. The dam is now a member of Mr. T. A. Duncan's stud, where she has been mated with Laughing Prince. Golden Time, who had a couple of unplaced starts last season, is a three-year-old chestnut filly by Lackham from the Merry Moment mare Spare Moment, the dam also of Leisure, who was a serviceable -performer for Mr. L. H. Collinson a few seasons back. Golden Time is now owned by the Waipukurau trainer G. E. Tricklebank, who bought her from Mr. E. W. Barnes. Luella, though her name has previously been noted in nomination lists, does not appear yet to have been started. She is a six-year-old bay mare by Acre from the King Mark mare Lady Evelina, so that she is a younger sister to Lady Ronald. She is owned by her breeder, Mr. D. McLachlan, of Masterton. Martial Lady, who was produced twice last season, is a three-year-old chestnut filly by Lord Quex from the Martian —Lovelorn mare Dominant, so that she is a full-sister to The Haka, who has been a successful performer in South Africa for Sir Joseph Robinson. The family has been one of the best in the Dominion in recent years, Game Carrington and Peter. Jackson both being members of it. Martial Lady, after being passed. in at the yearling races, was acquired privately by Mr. J. Jameson (owner of Takakua and Erua), who has now leased her to the Awapuni trainer L. Wilson. The Sandwich Man is a visitor from Blenheim, where he is trained by J. O. E. Jones, who will also have the four-year-old Contract at Woodville for the other maiden event. The Sandwich Man is a five-year-old brown gelding by Shambles from the Joculator mare Leicester Square, and he is being raced by Mr. D. J. Gosling, of Blenheim, who holds him on lease from his breeder. Miss N. B. Teschemaker. He has had only one previous start, but his stablemate Contract, who is owned by Mr. A. M. Davidson, has had a fair amount of racing. . . ■ The only other horse on tomorrows lists who may be generally unfamiliar is Tiritea Jack, whose only previous starts were twice last season. He is a four-year-old brown gelding by Gascony (sire of Symcony, Gasman, etc.). from an Antagonistic mare, and he is owned by Mr. H. J. Stanbridge, of Wellington, who bought him from, his breeder, Mr. J. McCormick. He thus carries the same colours as Hunt the Slipper, Movie Star, and several other well-known horses of recent years.
