NEW NAZI PURGE

TENSE ATMOSPHERE

RAIDS BY SECRET POLICE

OGPIT-LIKE METHODS

United Tress Association—By lilectrio Tclo-

graph— Copyright. (Received December 3,-9 a.m.)

BERLIN, December 2. Herr Hitler lias ordered a new Nazi purge, which is most extensive, secret police raiding houses all over Germany. Suspects are taken to Gestapo headquarters, while agents remain in the houses searching for letters, books, and papers. The fate of the arrested persons is seldom disclosed, leading to the wildest rumours, but it is believed that the purge is aimed principally at Catholics who ai-e alleged to have participated in politics. Reactionaries are accused of conspiring against Nazi politico-economical measures. Nazi officials are suspected of graft and extravagance. The secret police are creating an atmosphere of tension similar to die Ogpu, whose methods they closely ■follow. Telephones are tapped, correspondence intercepted, and suspects shadowed. The extension of their activities is possibly due to widespread grumbling about the food shortage and rising prices. It is generally agreed that Germany is heading for a hard and dismal winter.
