AT ASHBURTON
WIN BY SOUTHDOWN
SPRINT EVENT TO GREAT STAR
(Speciai to the "Evening Post.")
CHRISTCHURCH, November 30,
Delightful conditions ruled for the Ashburton County Racing Club's Summer Meeting. Good fields provided some very keen racing, there being several close finishes. The totalisator handed £6685 10s against the £9522 for seven events last year.
Wonderful went off badly in the Highweight Handicap. Margaret Rose and Kose of Tralee wei-e the early leaders but after three furlongs Note Issue joined Margaret Rose in front, with Miracle and The Surgeon also handy. Manetho moved up at the entrance "to the straight and won easily by two lengths, Note Issue stalling off The Surgeon-by half a length. Jack Ahoy was two, lengths away, followed by Wonderful, who finished fast, while Miracle was next. Manetho has not been long in work, after a spell, which lasted a large part of last season, fol-lowing-on a fall at Riccarton in November. Miracle had every chance but did not run on. LAGMHOR PLATE. _ Culotte soon took charge in the Lagmhor Plate, Nolana, Coat of Arms, and Vervain following her all the way to the straight, where Roaming also joined in. Vervain and Roaming stayed on well, Vervain winning by a head. Coat of Arms was a length back, clear of Wine Card, with Rebel Queen, Nolana, and Pink Polly next The winner, a four-year-old mare by Weathervane, is a half-sister to Noteworthy and ' Pixie Gold, two Paper Money winners. .Roaming, by Nightmarch, ran his best race and will improve. Culotte stopped badly in the last bit. Hasta and Document ran into trouble just after the start, Document nearly falling. The Melrose Trot Handicap was a great race all the way. Old Faithful and Monetary broke at the start, Passport tangled after a furlong, and Tapdancer fell a little further on. Ace Pot led out from Credit Fund, Shadow Queen, St. Helena, and Colleen Wrack, while Zest joined in. St. Helena dropped out when- the straight was reached, while Zest failed in the final furlong. In an exciting .finish Shadow Queen, beat Ace Pot by a head, Credit Fund being a head away, with Zest two lengths back, then Colleen Wrack and Our War. The winner is trained by O. E. Hooper, but as he was absent at Forbury Park, F. Holmes was the driver. * ' THE TINWALD HANDICAP. Imperial Spear soon took charge in the Tinwald Handicap, Courtyard ioining him after three furlongs, where Tout le Monde, Dollar Prince, Queen of Song, and Davolo were handy. Southdown was last at this stage but moved up when the straight was reached and won easily by half a length from Queen of Song, who finished strongly. Courtyard was two lengths away, followed by Tout le Monde, Dollar Prince, and Davolo in a bunch. This was Southdown's first success for more than a year but he looks on the way back to his best form. Queen of Song gave further evidence of improvement. Davolo seemed to be going easily at the home turn. TOP COAT'S EASY WIN. Top Coat was backed as if he was a certainty for the Winchmore1 Hack Handicap and his supporters were never uneasy. Cheap Money led for two furlongs, when Top Coat headed him, Honour's Lass, Silver Jest, Penelope, and Top Rank being • handy. There was no change to the straight. Top Coat winning easily and Honour's Lass beating Cheap Money by half a length. Concert Pitch finished fast to cut Silver Jest out- of fourth place. The Surgeon and Golden Dart were next. Top Coat has raced very consistently this season and is On the way to good open class. Cheap Money covered some extra ground at the home turn. MOS.ETON HACK HANDICAP. Glenavon and Sky Rover were the early leaders in the Moreton Hack Handicap, Sky Pilot, Coatette, and Rona Bay being next at the mile post. A furlong further on Coatette took charge, with Rona Bay and Sky Pilot following her past the five-furlong post. Coatette tired in the straight and Rona Bay won from Sky Pilot by a length. Riptide finished fast, two lengths away, to beat Coatette, with Wonderful next. Rona Bay gave the first training success to the lightweight horseman W. H. Jones, who also rode her. Coatette stopped badly. Glenavon and Sky Rover collapsed a long way from home. GREAT STAR ALL THE WAY. Great Star was in front all the way in the Wakanui Handicap. Invoice attended him to the straight, where Emissary, Rebel Chief, Hororata, and Cranford were next. Great Star held his place and won by a length and a half from Emissary, who stayed on to cut Invoice out of second place on the post. Rebel Chief was going well in fourth place, with Cranford and Dollar Bill next. Rebel Star began slowly and finished last.
