TAKAPUNA MEETING
NEXT KING'S CUP CONTEST
KILTOWYN'S FINE WIN
SURPRISE BY POLLY DOUGLAS
(Special to the "Evening Post.")
AUCKLAND, This Day. Gloucester led practically all.the way in the Melrose Maiden Handicap, Karohia and Aramis being close up at the home turn. Gloucester hung on and scored with a bit in hand from the little-fancied Karohia, who is a three-year-old brother to the brilliant Karapoti. Valmint just nosed Fei Mah out of third money, and Madelon, Glenacre, and Gemland were up handy Bellkyrian, a solid favourite in the Spring Handicap, was caught unbalanced at the start, and then met trouble in the first furlong, going back to last. Prince Yen and Valspear led Teak and Gay Egypt to the straight, and over the last- bit Teak did much better than Prince Yen. Valspear was third, and Gay Egypt fourth. Next to arrive were Dancing Lady and Flit Acre, with a gap back to Fleetwind, Bellkyrian, and Solas. The winner who was at double figures, is a muchimproved colt.
Val Watch and then Indolent made ' the running in the Tiri Hurdles, but < they were together in front well clear of the field half a mile from home. They took the final hurdle together, where Indolent fell, leaving Val Watch i to score over King's Archer. Dark . Marble just cut Sweet Lap out of third 5 money. Prince of Orange and Car- - laris were next. Indolent might have ; been hard to beat with a stand up, but ' his jumping was poor. Black Marlin ] and London fell. ( THE ALISON CUP. \ Kiltowyn won the Alison Cup like a < good horse in a stirring finish. Gay '< iironey dwelt badly at the start. On i Parade was rushed to the front to l lead out of the straight from Miss ] Lv, Kiltowyn, Mungatoon, and Sir Abb. 1 Along the back On Parade slowed' up i the field, and Imamint ran up to him, the pair holding charge to lead into ; the straight from Kiltowyn, Miss Lv, ; Gay Broney, Sir Abb, Mungatoon, and '. Master Norval. It was a fine race ' home, with Kiltowyn winning narrowly '. over the outsider, Imamint, with Sir ' Abb a close third, just in front of " Mungatoon. On Parade, Miss Lv, and < Master Norval were all handy. ■ : Kiltowyn registered a fine perform- ; ance, and showed that he was much < below his best at Riccarton. Imamint ' showed a return to her best, and Sir " Abb and Mungatoon both finished i strongly. Kelly fell near the five-fur- i long post when he was running at the : tail of a bunched field. A PROMISING COLT. Surview, the Cambria Handicap favourite, soon . got to the front but failed to hold oil Maxown, who was , always handy. Queen's Counsel made up a lot of ground in the straight to get third, but Gay Chief's fourth was ! disappointing. The winner is a very promising colt, for he will improve a . great deal. TAKAPUNA PLATE. At the distance in the Takapuna ; Plate the pacemakers, Light Comedy and Bantry, were joined by Mazir, Tray Bit, Crooning, and Koyal Dance, who were well spread across the course. A ! splendid finish saw Tray Bit wear down Mazir, with Royal Dance, ' Light Comedy, and Crooning right up handy, and Kahapa, Bantry, Flood Tide, and Mungacre following. It was a brilliant field of hacks, which drew a pool of ' £5000, and on the running the best horse won. Kahapa was travelling well : at the home turn, but failed to go on and appeared to have lost form. IMPASTO DETERMINED. ] A splendid sprint field contested the ' Cheltenham Handicap, and as in the preceding event nali a dozen horses were in. line at the distance, this bunch comprising Impasto, Sinking Fund, Boughal, i Jasha, Astarth, and Princess Star. Impasto headed this lot through sheer grit, for he was on.the outside all the way: Star Artist finished well, Sinking Fund weakened, and Boughal was closer at the finish than at any part, being fourth, just in front of Astarth, Princess Star, and Royal Secret, with Pasha and Rereatu next. Jonathan, the favourite, failed to hold his place from the rise of the barrier and finished in the ruck. A BIG DIVIDEND. The surprise of the day came in the final event, which Polly Douglas won very nicely, and paid a dividend of nearly half a century and double figures for a place. She was forced through a narrow opening between Gay Defence and Tidalia at the half distance, and won from the latter decisively. Keith Lv headed Gay Defence for third. Te Broney, Enlightenment, Maine, and Huskie followed When the barrier was released practically the whole field got caught in the tapes, which were broken H Wiggins was pulled out of the saddle and his mount, King Tut, took no part m the race. The weather conditions were good and the totalisator investments were £29,663, against £25,156 10s-on the first, day last' year. . RESULTS IN DETAIL. The next King's Cup will be run at Adelaide in May, when the occasion will be a special one, celebrating the centenary of South Australia. When in England recently, Mr. • Butler, the Premier of South Australia, suggested to Lord Derby, that he should send out a horse from England to run in the King's Cup, and Lord Derby promised to give the matter serious consideration. However, as it would be necessary to send a really good class horse, and. as it would have to be shipped almost immediately, it looks as if there is little likelihood of seeing Lord Derby's colours in South Australia next May.
